EFSA clearance for Bayer GM cotton

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given safety clearance for import and food and feed uses to Bayer CropScience's genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant T304-40 cotton. The line expresses the Bt Cry1Ab toxin against lepidopteran pests and is tolerant to glufosinate-ammonium. The Authority’s opinion on Bayer’s application for EU approval goes forward for consideration by the European Commission. The GM trait is a component of Bayer’s TwinLink cotton (T304-40xGHB119), which gained US approval in 2012 and is also authorised in Australia/New Zealand, Brazil and Canada (Agrow No 633, p 22). Bayer plans to stack TwinLink with its glyphosate-tolerant GlyTol (GHB614) cotton, which gained EU import approval in 2011 (Agrow No 619, p 9).
