Nuseed seeks GM canola tests in Australia
Nufarm's seed subsidiary, Nuseed, has applied to the Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) to field test genetically modified canola with altered oil content. It plans to test up to 200 GM lines with a high proportion of omega-3 fatty acids. They have seven introduced genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis. The company plans to conduct the trials over a five-year period between March 2014 and March 2019. It aims to carry out tests on up to 2 ha at four sites in 2014, on up to 10 ha on six sites in 2015 and on a maximum of 20 ha at up to ten sites in subsequent years. The OGTR expects to issue a risk assessment and risk management plan in September 2013.
