ECHA outlines major change for biocide procedures

September 1st will see a “major change” in EU biocide registration procedures, ushering in a centralised hub and paperless systems, says Hugues Kenigswald, head of the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) biocides unit. The ECHA takes over responsibility for the evaluation and registration of non-crop pesticides and other biocides from September 1st, when the new EU biocidal products Regulation (528/2012) is applied in member states (Agrow No 644, p 10). However, preparations have been hampered by financial and time constraints, and "certain limitations" will apply to operations from September, he warned at the Agency’s first biocides stakeholders' day on June 25th.
