US patent for MBI bioherbicide

The US biopesticide company, Marrone Bio Innovations (MBI - Davis, California), has received a US patent for sarmentine, the active ingredient in its bioherbicide, MBI-011.  Sarmentine was isolated from a Piper longum pepper plant and has also been extracted from other Piper spp plants, MBI notes.  The company applied for US approval of MBI-011 in December 2012 (Agrow No 659, p 24).  It is for the control of annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds in agricultural crops, turf and ornamentals, and for the home garden market.
