US funding for invasive weed bioherbicide

The US conservation organisation, The Nature Conservancy, has awarded a five-year, $500,000 grant to scientists and land managers in Washington and Oregon to test a bacterium for the suppression of the invasive weed, cheatgrass ( Bromus tectorum), in rangeland. Pseudomonas fluorescens strain D7 has been shown to inhibit germinating cheatgrass seed, while not harming other species. The project is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the bacterium as a bioherbicide under a range of environmental conditions.
