Egypt approves GM crops
Egypt has approved for the first time commercial planting of genetically modified Bt maize, the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service reports. The change comes after the Egyptian Minister of Agriculture, Amin Abaza, approved decisions by the National Biosafety Committee and the Seed Registration Committee favouring GM crop cultivation. The approval came after a national seed company, acting on behalf of a multinational, carried out field trials last year. Bt maize trials conducted last year in Egypt displayed a high level of resistance to insect infestations ( Agrow No 532, p 20). The company aims to import GM seed from South Africa and plans to grow the Bt maize throughout Egypt.
