US milestone for Syngenta's Viptera maize
Syngenta’s insect-resistant Agrisure Viptera maize trait has come a step nearer commercialisation following the completion of the consultation process by the US Food and Drug Administration. The Viptera trait, formerly referred to as MIR162, received EPA approval in late November 2008 ( Agrow No 558, p 22). It utilises the Bt Vip3A toxin for lepidopteran pest control. Syngenta plans to introduce the trait in its genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant maize lines in spring 2010, subject to deregulation by the USDA and approvals in key export markets.
