EU agchem residue detections rise
The latest EU statistics on pesticide residue monitoring show slight increases in detections of residues in some commodities but a decline in the percentage exceeding maximum residue limits (MRLs), the European Commission says. The 2006 survey, which covered the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, analysed 65,810 samples of fruit, vegetables, cereals and processed products. Of these, 54% contained no detectable residues, while 42% contained residues below MRLs and 4.4% exceeded MRLs. In 2005, the comparable figures were 54.3%, 41% and 4.7%, respectively ( Agrow No 532, p 10).
