EU court dismisses beekeepers' bid to ban ais

The EU Court of First Instance has dismissed a lawsuit by European beekeeping groups that sought to cancel the re-registration of the insecticides, ethoprophos, pirimiphos-methyl and fipronil. The three active ingredients were added to Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) in 2007 ( Agrow No 527, p 9). The Court said that the case brought by national beekeeping associations in France, Germany, Italy and Spain was inadmissible. The Annex I listing of fipronil requires the use of risk-reduction measures and the submission of further studies on bee safety. Nevertheless, seed treatments containing the ai have been subject to temporary suspensions in Italy, Germany and France in recent years due to concerns over bees ( Agrow passim).
