Spanish container recycling up in 2008
Spain recycled or disposed of 2,800-3,000 tonnes of empty pesticide containers in 2008, according to early estimates from the Spanish pesticide container recycling organisation, the Sigfito. That is a rise of 5-13% on the 2,660 tonnes collected in 2007. Confirmed figures show a rise in collection of almost 7% to 2,121 tonnes for the first nine months of 2008. The Sigfito cut fees for collections last year by 9.3%. It renewed its five-year operating licence in eight Spanish regions in 2008, and presented its collection plan (PEP) for 2008-10 to the regional authorities of Madrid, Catalonia and Valencia. The responsibility for carrying out the PEP rests with associate companies. The association collected 42% of the country’s empty containers in 2007, it says.
