EFSA clears Monsanto's new GM maize
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given safety clearance to imports and food and feed use of Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant MON89034 maize line. The EFSA's opinion is a stage in the EU GMO registration process and will be considered by the European Commission and EU member states before a decision on approval is made. MON89034 has received US approval for cultivation and will be commercialised this year as YieldGard VT PRO, subject to import approvals being granted in major export markets ( Agrow No 549, p 22). It has already gained approval for import in Canada, Colombia, Japan and Mexico.
