MEPs call for single EU/US GMO approval system
The EU and the US should follow a single authorisation procedure for all food and feed containing genetically modified organisms, says the European Parliament. The call comes in a resolution adopted by the Parliament in May on strengthening EU/US economic ties. Such a system should operate in accordance with the precautionary principle, and emphasise the importance of labelling and traceability of GMOs to enable customers to make informed choices, the Parliament says. The EU authorities have come under mounting criticism during the past year over the slow GMO approval process and the threat to supplies of imported feed (see this issue).
