EFSA highlights workload in 2008
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) delivered three times as many risk assessment reports on pesticide active ingredients in 2008, compared with the previous year, according to its latest annual report. Streamlined peer review procedures helped the EFSA deliver conclusions on 62 ais. The increased workload during the year also reflected the EFSA's completion of its risk assessment work for the EU review of existing ais. Elsewhere, the Authority's pesticide residues unit completed its work on setting maximum residue limits (MRLs) for about 200 ais prior to new EU MRL rules coming into force last September. In the last four months of the year, it issued seven reasoned opinions on setting new MRLs and 12 on MRLs of concern for certain ais. With work on the ai review complete, the EFSA's major task has now shifted to a review programme of EU MRLs ( Agrow No 564, p 14).
