Monsanto's new Bt maize cleared in US
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has deregulated Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant YieldGard VT PRO (MON89034) maize. It expresses the Bt Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 toxins for the control of a range of lepidopteran pests. The US EPA recently granted tolerance exemptions for both toxins in maize, sweetcorn and popcorn ( Agrow No 548, p 15). The USDA recommended deregulation of YieldGard VT PRO late last year ( Agrow No 534, p 13).
