GM maize plantings start in Germany amid protest

German farmers have committed to planting around 4,400 ha of genetically modified maize in 2008, following the ratification of the country's new GMO law earlier this year ( Agrow No 538, p 14), according to the environmentalist group, Greenpeace. It has responded by identifying and publishing information on all planned GM maize plots online. It has called on landowners, neighbouring farmers and consumers to take action to prevent the planting of GM plants in their fields, or guard the minimum distance between GM and conventional or organic crop fields, and to consume food made from conventional maize.
