Virulent potato blight hits Scotland
A new and extremely harmful strain of potato blight ( Phytophthora infestans) is threatening Scottish crops, reports the newspaper, The Scotsman. "We are now dealing with a different type of blight," Rob Clayton, of the Potato Council, is reported as saying. Blight ranks first among diseases that put potato crops at risk. Consequently, UK growers reportedly spend over £20 million ($39.4 million) annually to fight the disease.
