Uganda to test Monsanto GM cotton lines
Uganda is to test two of Monsanto’s genetically modified cotton lines “soon”, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications’ newswire, CropBiotech, reports. The trials are for bollworm-resistant Bollgard and glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready Flex. Monsanto has agreed a deal with the public body, the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) to test the products in Uganda. The trials will evaluate performance, as well as environmental, social and economic effects, CropBiotech adds. The NARO received an import licence for the GMOs last month. Uganda approved field trials on GM cotton last year ( Agrow No 536, p 21), and later passed biosafety legislation, paving the way for commercial planting ( Agrow No 541, p 22).
