Swiss get FVO salute on plant health controls
Switzerland has a capable system for plant health controls, the European Commission's Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) says. The staff are competent, the distribution of tasks well-organised and the support from laboratories efficient. The system “ensures strict control of the plant health situation in the country”. The country’s import controls do not get a clean bill of health. The FVO recommends, among other things, that the Swiss border control authorities: carry out physical phytosanitary inspections on all products that are imported from third countries; improve inspections of imported plants to provide a better basis for establishing their quality; register importers of products; and identify the destination of arriving consignments. The findings are from an October 2007 FVO mission.
