EU fails to agree on Monsanto's GM soybeans
The EU GMO regulatory committee has failed to agree on whether to accept or reject the proposed approval of Monsanto's genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready 2 Yield (MON 89788) soybean line. The European Commission proposed authorisation for import, processing and use in food and feed, following clearance for this use by the European Food Safety Authority earlier this year ( Agrow No 549, p 11). The Commission says that it will refer the case to EU Ministers. If they do not reach a decision within three months, the Commission is free to go ahead with the approval. "The authorisation of this GM soybean is important as it will help in preventing shortages in supply of the EU livestock industry with soybean imports from third countries," the Commission says.
