German concern over illegal pesticide

An illegal pesticide scandal has been uncovered in Germany in which a Hamburg-based businessman supplied the EU-banned insecticide, nicotine sulfate, to some gardening companies, reports the German newspaper, Die Welt. Authorities confiscated 19.4 tonnes of nicotine sulfate and found that poison warnings on the labels of the 200-litre barrels had been switched for those of permitted substances. The insecticide was not used by companies dealing in foodstuffs, it is reported.
