Sementes Agroceres debuts YieldGard maize in Brazil
Monsanto’s Brazilian seed subsidiary, Sementes Agroceres, has launched two hybrids of its genetically modified insect-resistant Yieldgard maize in Brazil, national media report. The seed is resistant to fall armyworms ( Spodoptera frugiperda), corn earworms ( Helicoverpa zea), and corn borers ( Diatraea saccharalis). Brazil approved the commercial planting of Yieldgard maize last year ( Agrow No 538, p 32), the first generation of GM maize in the country. Yieldgard maize is marketed internationally, including in neighbouring Argentina. The hybrids products, AG 8088 YG and AG 9010, were introduced at the Brazilian trade fair, ShowTec 2009, in Maracaju in February, and are available for the safrinha (late season) season.
