BASF/Nidera improve Clearfield sunflowers

BASF and the Argentine seed company, Nidera (Buenos Aires), are to introduce a new range of imidazolinone herbicide-tolerant Clearfield sunflowers, with commercialisation planned for 2010. The “CLHA-Plus” technology allows the production of sunflower hybrids with “expanded weed control options and enhanced tolerance to Clearfield herbicides”, the companies point out. It will also allow faster breeding of higher yielding hybrids, they add. The technology will be made available through “numerous seed partners”. BASF and Nidera agreed to collaborate on Clearfield sunflowers in 2003 ( Agrow No 426, p 2). Clearfield crops are not genetically modified.
