US EPA approves Viptera stacks

The US EPA has approved two stacked trait lines of Syngenta’s genetically modified insect-resistant Agrisure Viptera maize. The Viptera combinations with Agrisure GT/CB/LL and Agrisure 3000GT provide control of a range of above-ground pests and tolerance to the herbicides, glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium. The Agrisure 3000GT combination also controls corn rootworms ( Diabrotica spp). Both combinations are due to be introduced this spring, subject to US deregulation and the granting of key import approvals. The EPA approved the Viptera trait in November 2008. It utilises the Bt Vip3A toxin for lepidopteran pest control ( Agrow No 558, p 22).
