EFSA rejects Austrian GM maize ban

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says that there is no scientific justification for Austria's ban on two EU-approved genetically modified maize lines: Monsanto's insect-resistant MON810 maize and Bayer CropScience's glufosinate-tolerant T25. The European Commission had asked the EFSA in April to review new evidence submitted by Austria to support its action, which has been in place for many years. Earlier this year, the Commission finally gained clearance to order Austria to lift its ban on imports and processing, but the country's prohibition on cultivation remains in place ( Agrow No 543, p 8).
