Brazil authority defends agchem reassessments
The Brazilian authorities have defended their carrying out re-evaluations on 13 pesticide active ingredients. Director of the national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, José Agenor Alvares da Silva has told the national chemical industry that the re-evaluations are the agency’s legal responsibility. The Anvisa passed Resolution 10/08 in February last year, to re-assess 14 ais ( Agrow No 539, p 18), following which there was a strong reaction from the pesticide industry. “Three separate legal actions” resulted in injunctions, suspending the Anvisa’s work ( Agrow No 549, p 19), he notes. The injunctions have been overturned in all but one case.
