No relief from EU REACH demands
EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas has rejected calls for the implementation of new EU Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation to be suspended to help companies cut costs in the current financial crisis. "This would not be the right way forward," Mr Dimas said at the Helsinki Chemicals Forum in Finland at the end of May. "There is no doubt that these are difficult economic times, but we must consider the current economic downturn as an opportunity and not as an obstacle," he added, arguing that REACH would help promote innovation and competitiveness. REACH covers a wide range of chemicals, including agrochemical intermediates and co-formulants. Submission deadlines for registration dossiers range from November 2010 to May 2018 ( Agrow No 541, p 10).
