Fewer pesticide residues in California
No pesticide residues were detected in 70.2% of the 3,483 samples of more than 140 commodities tested in the US state of California in 2008. That compares with 62.6% in the previous year ( Agrow No 550, p 15). Illegal residues were detected in 1.1% of samples tested in 2008, according to the California EPA Department of Pesticide Regulation. Just one of the 40 samples with illegal residues was due to a tolerance being exceeded, with the remainder being due to residues of a pesticide not authorised for use on that commodity. Residues within tolerances were detected in 28.7% of samples.
