EFSA mulls antibiotic markers in GM crops
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has asked its scientific panels to further consider the use of antibiotic resistance marker genes in GM plants. In response to a request from the European Commission last year, an EFSA working group has been reviewing the use of antibiotic marker genes in GM plants being developed or already on the market. However, the draft opinion produced was accompanied by minority opinions from two panel members about possible adverse effects on human health and the environment. The EFSA last reviewed this issue in 2004, when it cleared the use of genes for some antibiotic groups, but advised against using certain groups that are important in clinical use.
