Malaysia to enforce biosafety law

Malaysia is to enforce a biosafety law, in the second half of 2008, to regulate the import, export, handling and use of genetically modified organisms, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications newswire. The country’s Ministry for Natural Resources and the Environment is considering the establishment of a regulatory body to oversee all matters from the implementation of the law, to biosafety approvals, enforcement and monitoring. Final proposals for the biosafety law were approved by a Malaysian biosafety council towards the end of 2006 ( Agrow No 507, p 18).
