Australasia assesses Optimum GAT soybeans

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has received an application from DuPont seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International for the approval of food derived from genetically modified herbicide-tolerant soybeans. The DP-356043-5 line has been modified to express tolerance to glyphosate and acetolactate synthase inhibitors. Pioneer plans a limited introduction of Optimum GAT soybeans in the US in 2009. The USDA proposed the deregulation of the soybeans last year ( Agrow No 530, p 16). The FSANZ is expected to start its assessment this month, with a decision scheduled for May 2009.
