EU withdrawal set for nicotine and flurprimidol
The European Commission has instructed EU member states to withdraw approvals for the botanical insecticide, nicotine, by June 8th 2009, and the plant growth regulator, flurprimidol, by July 13th 2009. Existing stocks may be used for one year from these dates. The move follows the decision not to re-register the active ingredients, which were in the EU review of existing ais ( Agrow No 556, p 14). The nicotine evaluation concluded that existing evidence was insufficient to demonstrate safe use with respect to operators, workers, bystanders and consumers, says the Commission. The flurprimidol assessment concluded that operator and worker exposure exceeded acceptable levels.
