China OKs microbial degradation agent

A project in China to manufacture a microbial degradation agent for organophosphate pesticides has passed inspection by a panel of experts from the Fujian provincial department of technology. The project, undertaken by the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, has identified strains of the bacteria, Enterobacter cloacae, which break down residues of the organophosphate insecticide, dimethoate. The product, named “Jianglinling” (efficacious at reducing phosphorus), achieved a phosphorus degradation rate of 50% in field tests, the Academy reports.
