EFSA rules Dow's unapproved GM maize line safe
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that potential contamination of imports of Dow AgroSciences/ DuPont's genetically modified insect-resistant 59122-7 maize (Herculex RW) with the unapproved GM maize line, 59132-8 (or E-32 in the US), would be unlikely to present a specific risk for health or the environment. Dow recalled certain GM maize seed lots earlier this year after low levels of E-32 were found in some Herculex RW maize products in the US ( Agrow No 538, p 18). The EU approved the import of 59122-7 maize last year ( Agrow No 531, p 9). The unapproved line has not been detected in Europe to date, the EFSA notes.
