EU extends essential use of temephos
The European Commission has allowed the use of the organophosphate insecticide, temephos, for mosquito control in the French overseas departments to continue until May 14th 2010. The move represents a one-year extension to existing arrangements. EU biocidal approvals for temephos were withdrawn in September 2006 because it was not supported through the review of existing ais under the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8). However, the French authorities asked for an exemption on the basis that there were no suitable alternatives for this particular use.
