Clearfield sunflowers application in Canada
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada have confirmed an application by BASF for the approval of imidazolinone herbicide-tolerant Clearfield sunflowers. The application is for unconfined environmental release and for food and feed use. The non-genetically modified sunflowers were developed using mutagenesis and plant breeding. The authorities approved the technology for oilseed and confectionary use in 2005 ( Agrow No 481, p 22). Five Clearfield sunflower varieties were approved for commercial introduction in 2008 ( Agrow No 527, p 25).
