US clears GM cotton after inadvertent release
The US EPA has established an 18-month exemption for residues of the Bt Cry1A.105 toxin in cotton following a request by Monsanto. The petition was made to cover a small amount of an unauthorised GM cotton line that was inadvertently harvested last year ( Agrow No 558, p 14). The EPA determined that there would be no health risks from consumption of the toxin but its presence in the cotton was illegal. The tolerance exemption will expire on November 22nd 2010.
