EU sets application rate limits for diuron
The European Commission has confirmed the re-registration of the herbicide, diuron, subject to a maximum application rate of 0.5 kg/ha. The active ingredient was cleared by the EU regulatory committee earlier this year, having previously failed to gain re-registration ( Agrow No 551, p 11). The lower rate and additional data provided by DuPont and German company Lanxess Distribution eliminate earlier concerns regarding operator exposure, and risks to ground water, birds and mammals, the Commission says. EU member states are required to impose further risk mitigation measures "where appropriate" to protect operators, such as the use of personal protection equipment, and aquatic organisms and non-target plants. Diuron was added to Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) on October 1st.
