EU action to end methyl bromide use exemptions

A plan to accelerate the phase-out of the ozone-depleting fumigant, methyl bromide, by banning all uses by March 18th 2010, has been approved by the European Parliament. The proposals would remove uses that are currently exempt under the Montreal Protocol ban, such as quarantine and pre-shipment (QPS) applications. The European Commission proposed changes to existing EU rules on ozone-depleting substances last year ( Agrow No 550, p 13).
