India approves five GM field trials

The Indian Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) has approved five field trials of genetically modified crops. Approvals have been given to: Monsanto India for conducting trials on two stacked maize hybrids containing insect-resistant MON 89034 and glyphosate-tolerant NK603; Monsanto’s Indian joint venture partner Mahyco for trials on stacked cotton hybrids containing insect-resistant MON15985 and glyphosate-tolerant MON88913; Dow AgroSciences India for experimental seed production of WideStrike cotton expressing Bt Cry1Ac and Cry1F genes; and the Indian Central Potato Research Institute (Shimla) for trials on GM potato clones expressing RB genes for resistance to late blight ( Phytophthora infestans).
