Drought cuts Argentine crop area
The Argentine soybean area for the 2008/09 season is set to dip below its record level of last year. New figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, the SAGPyA, point to a 16.5 million ha area for the country’s major crop, just 100,000 ha down on that of last season. The SAGPyA’s early estimates pointed to a new record of 17.8 million ha ( Agrow No 555, p 20). The area for the country’s six major cereal and oilseed crops is forecast to fall by 8.4% to 28.2 million ha.
