Brazil hits recycling milestone
Brazil has collected 100,000 tonnes of empty pesticide packaging, according to the container disposal organisation, the InpEV. The milestone has been reached over six years, with the InpEV starting its operations in 2002. The InpEV recycled or incinerated over 21,000 tonnes of empty pesticide packages last year ( Agrow No 536, p 18), and had dealt with 16,779 tonnes by the end of August this year. The programme received R$270 million ($140 million at current rate) in industry investments in that period. The InpEV celebrated “national countryside day” in August, including the participation of over 100 of the 375 empty container collection points in the country. It has claimed that Brazil is the world’s leading empty pesticide container recycler ( Agrow No 508, p 17).
