Support for continued EU use of creosote
A consultation held by the European Commission has revealed support for the continued use of the wood preservative, creosote. The active ingredient is being reviewed as part of the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8). The Commission sought views on a possible ban after the EU evaluation identified some risks from its use to human health and the environment ( Agrow No 543, p 10). A large majority of respondents mentioned the high cost of phasing out creosote. While some alternative treatments were suggested, the main opinion was that most of them do not fulfil the demands properly, the Commission says. It will consider the responses, together with the scientific assessment.
