French court confirms Monsanto fine

The French Court of Appeal at Lyon has confirmed that there is no need to increase the fine imposed on the former president of Monsanto France for “misleading advertising” of its herbicide, Roundup (glyphosate), reports French newswire Agrisalon.com. Monsanto was fined €15,000 ($19,375 at current rate) by a French court in January 2007 for labelling Roundup as “biodegradable” because the “misleading” term could lead users to believe that the product was “natural” ( Agrow No 513, p 5). Monsanto had disagreed with the judgement and reiterated that the product was biodegradable. The appellate court also confirmed the fine of €15,000 on the second defendant - then chairman of the board of Monsanto’s distributor in France, Scotts France (Ecully), Agrisalon reports.
