Record Canadian crop areas

Farmers in all three western provinces of Canada have planted record areas of canola this year, according to Statistics Canada’s June survey. Farmers in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan planted a total of 15.6 million acres (6.3 million ha) of canola, up by 7.1% on the previous year and some 900,000 acres more than forecast in March ( Agrow No 543, p 14). Improved prices appear to have prompted the increase, despite relatively high input costs for the crop, Statistics Canada notes.
