Paraguay opens new agchem trade port
Paraguay has opened the port of Pilar as a temporary entry point for imported pesticides from the Mercosur region. The port of Villeta was previously the only entry point for pesticide imports. It has suffered from falling river levels, which have impacted on trade. All importers registered at the port can use their licences at Pilar. Importers attempted last year to overturn the policy of the customs office, the DNA, of allowing only one port as a point of entry for pesticide imports, citing it as an illegal restriction of trade. The office countered that legal provisions allowed it to set restrictions on the import or export of “certain merchandise” on health and environmental protection grounds.
