EU considers sustainable use of biocides
Developing a sustainable use strategy for biocidal products, including non-crop pesticides, could reduce health and environmental risks from their use, concludes a study carried out for the European Commission. However, biocides provide a necessary service and any reduction in their use must not significantly compromise the quality of that service, the study's authors caution. The work is part of a Commission review of whether to impose controls on the use phase of biocides ( Agrow No 543, p 8). The controls would be in addition to any risk mitigation measures imposed as part of the evaluation and registration process covered by the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8).
