EFSA considers cultivation of NK603 maize

Specific management measures for the use of the herbicide, glyphosate, would be required if Monsanto's genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant NK603 maize were to be cultivated in the EU, concludes the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In its assessment of Monsanto's application for EU approval to grow the crop, the EFSA concludes that the potential environmental impacts are indirect effects entirely associated with the use of complementary herbicides. The NK603 maize itself is unlikely to cause any direct adverse effects, the EFSA points out.
