USDA tries twin biocontrol method on fire ants
US researchers are investigating a two-pronged approach to the biological control of red imported fire ants ( Solenopsis invicta). They are seeking to infect the ants with the fungal pathogen, Kneallhazia solenopsae, via the infection of parasitoid phorid flies ( Pseudacteon spp). Both of the agents have been used separately against the pest. The research is being conducted by USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists in the US and Argentina.
