South African GMO (genetically modified organism) area rockets

South Africa's genetically modified crop area expanded nearly three-fold to 1.4 million ha in 2006, compared with 500,000 ha a year earlier. This is the second-highest percentage rise worldwide, after India, according to the latest estimates by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA - Agrow No 512, p 13). South Africa ranks as the eighth-largest GM crop producer worldwide, after the technology was introduced eight years ago.
