Monsanto renews interest in GM wheat

Monsanto has renewed its interest in the development of genetically modifed wheat with the purchase of the US wheat breeding company, WestBred (Butte, Montana). The company will explore opportunities to develop herbicide-tolerant and disease-resistant wheat, but it does not plan any further development of its first-generation glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready wheat. Monsanto decided to pull out of the European wheat breeding business in 2003 ( Agrow No 435, p 1) and suspended development of Roundup Ready wheat the following year ( Agrow No 448, p 3).
